Catching Up

We have reviews for you. Yes, indeedy, so, since it’s been a while, let’s get right to it.

Comics creator Joe Mignola ventures into the realm of “illustrated novel” with collaborator Christopher Golden in Joe Golem and the Drowned City.

Elizabeth Bear is back with another tale of Bijou the Artificer and her fellow adventurers, as they go on a quest in search of the Book of Iron.

And from magical universes to alternate histories — that’s where we are with Mike Resnick’s The Doctor and the Rough Rider, in which Doc Holliday meets Teddy Roosevelt.

And next, a new book from Steven Brust and Skyler White — think of The Illuminati via Viva! Las Vegas! And then add layers on layers of layers, a little misdirection, some outright deception, and yes, we do eventually learn that there’s a mystery involving The Incrementalists.

To wrap it up for today, imagine that most suave and civilized of vampires, Count Saint-Germain, protecting pilgrims on their way to holy places in Africa, in the year 1225. That’s what we have from Chelsea Quinn Yarbro in Night Pilgrims.

That’s it for today, but I suspect we’ll be back with more before too long — the season’s turning, and that means our reviewers will be hunkering down with some new books and music for those longer evenings.
