Eivør Palsdottir & The Danish Radio Big Band, Trollabundin (Cope Records, 2005)

If there was only one thing that impressed me about this album it had to be the cover and booklet. It is very expensively done with see through tracing type paper covering the artistic photos beneath, the sort of thing usually reserved for wedding albums in the U.K. But sadly, for me, the rest of the album left me cold and un-entertained and not exactly spellbound (Trollabundin being the translation in Danish -- or is it Faroese? -- for spellbound). Eivør Palsdottir wrote all the songs. They have very deep lyrics set to big band arrangements with a modern classical-jazz feel to them.

Eivør Palsdottir sings very well in an expressive style, and needlessly to say the Danish Radio Band performs beautifully. Eivør sings all the songs in Danish (or Faroese). The booklet also contains all the lyrics printed in Danish/Faroese; either way it was lost on me, for I speak neither. As you can imagine, this did make listening and appreciating the songs fully a bit difficult. However, in the sleeve notes there is also a brief English translation printed below, but it didn't help much. If it is Eivør Palsdottir's intention to bring her music to the English speaking world, it is essential for the songs to be sung in English.

Therefore, I feel duty bound to say that it really is essential, if you are to fully appreciate this album, to be fluent in Danish or Faroese; otherwise the feeling or theme of the album may be lost on you.

If, on the other hand, if you are only English speaking, and are content to listen to a fine singer, with something very different to offer, and can enjoy a good orchestral backing, perhaps with a taste towards easy classical listening -- well, give it a try.
