Just popped over to help out for a bit — Mrs. Ware’s got everyone in the kitchen chopping up apples or some-such, and we’ve got reviews piling up in the bin.
We start off with a re-issue of an earlier work by that master of adventure and intrigue, Glen Cook. When we reviewed the Second Dread Empire Trilogy, we realized, to our horror, that we had never reviewed the first. Night Shade Books very graciously helped us rectify the error, and now we are able to bring you our review of A Cruel Wind, incorporating A Shadow of All Night Falling, October’s Baby, and All Darkness Met. (You want to know the best part? There are two “prequel” novels in the series, also recently re-issued. Night Shade to the rescue again, and our review will be up soon.)
Next, we have a collection of stories from one of my favorites among the younger generation of storytellers, C. E. Murphy — Baba Yaga’s Daughter and Other Tales of the Old Races. Knowing what a handful Baba Yaga can be, you can only tremble in anticipation of her daughter.
And we have next reviews of the first two books of a group effort, The Mongoliad, Book One and The Mongoliad, Book Two. Who are those writers? Well, start off with Neal Stephenson and Greg Bear, and go on from there.
And finally, for today at least, a look at something original in science fiction. Check out what our reviewer has to say about Hannu Rajaniemi’s The Quantum Thief.
